Precision medicine
Science is too much important in modern era that we cannot imagine life without it.Science provides us with knowledge of logic. Science is concerned with providing a solid basis on factual ,repeatable, measurable and determinable results. But to our dismay, a very few number of students are studying science .There are several factors contributing in this regard but we are somehow trend followers as well. So there is no way for moving ahead without scientific knowledge.
Precision medicine is an innovative approach to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of disease that take into account individual differences in genes, environment and life style. The motivation behind the precision medicine is that each individual is different from another individual. It has been proved from biological techniques such as DNA sequencing and proteomics.
Nowadays it is possible to know the exact gene sequence of an individual. Human genome project has also been completed in 2004; and total genes in human DNA have been identified and mapped as well. Today genomics is being used in forensic as well. Now it is very easy to sequence the DNA of an individual, and from that sequencing, it is possible to predict diseases that in future would be likely to occur in that particular individual. The identification of variations is possible by modern biological techniques.
There are many research and clinical activities that are going on in precision medicine. These activities predict individualistic diagnostics and detect sign of disease and it becomes very easy to develop therapeutics against that disease.
We know about the environment of particular geographic area and we know already about cultures and life styles of particular societies. They are already well studied .
So with precision medicine we can optimize disease prevention and diagnosis and treatment. It is an innovative approach and scientific societies are greatly excited about precision medicine.
However, precision medicine is an innovative approach in clinical approach but yet not approved. There are several ethical, social and legal concerns about this approach. Participants’ privacy protection would be critical. Cost is another problem .Precision medicine initiative will cost several million dollars. Drug for individual will be expensive. There will be affordability issues as to who will be able to benefit from it.
